Overview

Residency is a full, intense, and often challenging three years, and we understand that life continues outside of the confines of the clinic or hospital. We also know that we are more successful at our work as practitioners and healers when we are able to care for ourselves continually, not just on an as-needed basis. To that end, we are dedicated to supporting each resident’s personal journey through a culture that promotes community, humanism, and respect.

Camaraderie

The UW AK IM residents will have the opportunity to form close relationships with the entire UW AK IM residency program in Seattle, particularly their PGY1 primary care cohort. During the Alaska years, residents will share select rotations and professional development activities with peers from the Alaska Family Medicine Residency and the UW/Seattle Children's Pediatric Residency Alaska Track. In Soldotna, residents will be integrated into a close-knit medical community that promotes a high level of collegiality and camaraderie. They will connect with and mentor rotating medical students on their UW IM core clerkship. The curriculum also will emphasize longitudinal opportunities for residents to foster the relationships they forged during their PGY1 year.

Financial Wellness

UW AK IM residents will benefit from relatively low cost-of-living and high quality of life during their time in Alaska. We also will support residents through paid medical licenses, professional development and travel, and lodging for rotations located more than 50 miles from the primary work site. Residents get full healthcare and retirement benefits through the University of Washington.

Physical Wellness

Both the Seattle and Soldotna areas offer residents a culture that promotes enjoying and taking advantage of the outdoors. Many of the core hospitals and clinics in Seattle are conveniently located near bike/walking routes. In Soldotna, it is possible to walk, bike, or even cross-country ski to work depending on season and residential location.

Counseling

UW AK IM residents have free confidential access to counseling through the UW Medicine Graduate Medical Education wellness service.

As a UW AK Internal Medicine Resident, you and/or your spouse/partner will receive up to four free visits with a mental health counselor provided by the UW GME Wellness Service.
